Temposonics® Position Sensors
Temposonics Technology is the manner in which MTS applies the principles of magnetostriction to create a reliable position measurement system for use in industrial environments. Inside the sensor a torsional strain pulse is induced in a specially designed magnetostrictive waveguide by the momentary interaction of two magnetic fields. One field comes from a moving magnet, which passes along the outside of the transducer tube, and the other field is generated from a current pulse which is applied to the waveguide. The interaction between these two magnetic fields produces a strain pulse which travels at sonic speed along the sensor waveguide, until the pulse is detected at the head of the transducer. The position of the moving magnet is precisely determined by measuring the elapsed time between the application of the current pulse and the arrival of the strain pulse. As a result, MTS is able to create a reliable position measurement system that is capable of providing an accurate and repeatable measurement.
R-Series V is the successor to our current fourth generation. The new sensors have higher resistance to vibration and high temperatures, are ready for Industry 4.0 and fit perfectly into existing applications.

The T-Series family of sensors is designed for applications found in Hazardous (Increased Safety & Flameproof) and Safety (SIL)-regulated environments. Temposonics® magnetostrictive technology is maximized with powerful electronics that assures immunity against interference, resulting in a robust design that produces the highest accuracy measurements. Like TIIS, CML is now certified for Japan approvals; this means T-Series position sensors can be installed in hazardous applications and areas in regions requiring this approval.
G-Series sensors feature a microprocessor-based design with enhanced diagnostics and programmability, offering the flexibility to fit a wide range of applications. One of the primary benefits is the direct backward compatibility for retrofitting legacy sensor models. G-Series sensors are available with analog outputs (voltage or current) or digital-pulse outputs (Start/Stop or PWM).
The Temposonics® GB-Series is designed to be incorporated into hydraulic cylinders, such as those typically used in power generation plants. The flat, compact electronics housing facilitates deployment in restricted spaces. The operational advantages of these sensors are: high pressure resistance, strong immunity to EMI and ability to operate in temperatures up to +100 °C. GB-Series sensors can be programmed using a hand-programmer unit, through the USB port or wirelessly via Bluetooth®. Thanks to the Bluetooth® proprieties it is possible to set and monitor parameters remotely – making the operator’s life significantly easier!
The GB-M and GB-T models offer additional advantages:
- The sensor electronics housing with its electrical connection can be rotated 360 degrees to easily achieve the necessary connection orientation.
- If needed, the sensor element and electronics can be replaced while the flange is still installed in the cylinder and so without interrupting the hydraulic circuit – resulting in lower maintenance costs and reduced downtime.
The E-series is the basic sensor in the product range of magnetostrictive position sensors. Its excellent price-performance ratio is an unbeatable asset even for traditional users of different position measurement technologies.
